Porsche is waiting a year to release its all-new 2023 Macan SUV EV. This is happening in the wake of the German sports car manufacturer’s successful IPO, which occurred less than a month ago. The Macan EV was supposed to come out next year, but now it won’t come out until at least 2024. It will be a mid-sized SUV that will replace the very successful Macan.
According to Porsche sources, the Premium Platform Electric, the first electric vehicle to employ the Volkswagen Group’s all-new premium EV platform, has been delayed due to software development delays and glitches (PPE).
Since the beginning of last year, Porsche has been testing prototypes of the Macan EV. They confirmed that it would use an 800-Volt architecture and have “improvements in range” over current EV SUVs. The company wants half of its cars (including hybrids and EVs) to be electric by 2025. Last year, 14% of the cars it sold were EVs.
The E3 1.2 software platform, which was made by Cariad, a software spin-off of Volkswagen based in Berlin, is said to hold back the PPE architecture, which was made by Audi and Porsche together. In Porsche’s IPO prospectus, it was already said that Cariad’s work on the E3 2.0 software stack and upgrades to the existing E3 1.2 system could cause problems.
Questions will be raised about whether or not an earlier notification of the Macan’s delay would have significantly altered the September IPO of 911 million shares, which valued Porsche at $77 billion. The PPE architecture behind the Porsche Cayenne, the next large SUV in the Cayenne line, and the all-electric versions of the Boxster and Cayman siblings raises the possibility of repercussions.
Porsche, on the other hand, has said that it can leave SSV if it wants to. If it does, it may go its own way with the PPE software stack, leaving the expensively set up Cariad almost out of the loop.
It has already said that it is planning a new platform for a two-door EV with a small number of units, and that it will change SSV to SSP (“P” for “performance”). Insiders say that the delay in making the Macan and Porsche’s dissatisfaction with the software stack could be due to long-standing disagreements between Porsche CEO Oliver Blume and Audi CEO Markus Duesmann.
Sources say that the last two years of change in PPE and electronics has been caused by a “irregular” relationship between the two leaders of high-end brands. Sources said that the two sides have been asking for more and more unique pieces for their own brands, which hurts the economies of scale that PPE had planned.
To make sure this doesn’t happen with the SSP platform, though, Porsche is in charge of development. This is because Duesmann’s former BMW boss, Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess, left the company. Diess was Duesmann’s boss at BMW.
